I woke up. The man had positioned himself strategically throughout the course of the night: his arm was draped across my chest and his right leg was slung across me as if we were old lovers. The background music of various snores and snorts drifted across the room.
Of course, we weren't lovers (well, not in my mind anyway).
I just tried to go back to sleep. Ignoring things usually works best in such situations.
However, after a couple minutes I realized that the man's cuddliness was just too much to handle. I kicked his leg off, nudged away his arm, turned over, and closed my eyes. A few minutes later I heard him get up and walk out of the room, and out of my life.
Korea is famous for its spas. They're called jimjilbangs, and for $5 you can shower, sit in a bunch of hot tubs, and sleep on decently comfortable floor mats. Most spas provide a variety of other amenities as well, like TV rooms and mini restaurants. Not only that, but they're open 24 hours a day, and you can come and go as you please.
Some people might be a little turned off by being around naked people of the same gender in the hot tub and locker room portion of the spa, but I just rationalize it away; for $5 for a shower, a couple minutes in the hot tub, a couple more in the hot hot tub, then one in the cold pool, and a pair of pajamas and a warm place to sleep (random Korean cuddle buddy - optional), I can rationalize much much more if need be.
What's even better is that these spas are everywhere. I can go to any city in Korea, and any part in any city, and always have a place to stay, any time of the day or night, no reservation necessary. Pretty cool. Pretty pretty cool.
While I've only slept at one so far, I plan on sleeping at more in the future. I feel pretty blessed to have woken up with a Korean guy laying on top of me during my first stay. I'm sure many people have slept at these spas multiple times and haven't gotten that same kind of personal service.
Perhaps it was some sort of initiation ritual.
Whatever it was, I'm in.
