It's about 8pm, and I got here at 7am, so writing on the blog seems like a reasonable choice in my quest to put off the inevitable mountain of chores I have written down on my Thursday-after-school-to-do-list.
Lately I've been realizing just how nice it is to teach ESL instead of actual English. The grading was much simpler last year, and planning lessons was more enjoyable. I anticipate the day I can get back into that kind of classroom.
But, in the mean time, I get to go with my students to Shakespeare plays. Here are some of my best and brightest, doing what they do best: being 7th graders.

I'm glad I got this shot of Bobby. He's a cool kid. He doesn't believe in using his locker, so his backpack is huge. I'm guessing that it weighs about 15kg/30lbs or so.

Mustafa and Karim are cool too. I told them to pretend the play had started. Oh, yeah, the play. It was a modern version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by Shakespeare. It was pretty good. The kids enjoyed it.

One thing the kids didn't enjoy was that we didn't have time to let them use all the snack money they'd brought.
The bus ride home was pretty fun. I told everyone to turn off their phones and Ipods and we just sang silly songs. Most of the boys didn't get into it, but the girls and I had a pretty good time. I showed them my "Yellow Bird" song that my 8th grade teacher had taught me (lyrics here).
And, back to reality and the 5 papers I have left to grade before I can move on to more tasks on my list. The joys of teaching know no bounds.

I'm really, REALLY glad that the yellow bird song is traveling its way around the world. I have fond memories of that song at all the most awkward/uncomfortable moments of our youth..long van rides, freezing cold nights locked outside at church sleepovers..all the fun things :) Way to keep it alive!
Thanks Meghan. I'm with you on that too. I was about to bust out with the "3 Chartreuse Buzzards" song, but I guess I was feeling self conscious that day.
