I was peeling some fruit last week at work. Some of my kids came up to me and said, "Teacher! No!" and showed me how to cut, Korean-style.
Apparently, when Koreans peel fruit with a knife, they cut towards themselves, not away from themselves.
They do it because they think that cutting away from themselves is really dangerous, and not the other way around.
After fighting with my kids about the right way to cut, I've decided to stop peeling fruit around Koreans in general, because no matter who I'm around - whether it's students or friends or teachers - everyone tries to show me the "right way" to cut, and looks at me like I'm inept because I cut away from myself instead of towards myself.
Look, I'm not here to change the world. I just teach English.
Not only that, but some battles are just a waste of time.
