Lies

I've convinced my kids that I'm an expert on the trees of this campus, and that I know a lot of stories about them. It started out when I told them that one of the really big trees had been planted by Benjamin Franklin.
Today, we were standing in front of a tree that had a long scar running up and down the trunk, and I said, "Now that tree there is really interesting. You would think that the scar was caused by a lightning strike, but that's not true. It's actually what they call a Squirrel Scar. You see, squirrels have used that path so much that their claws have caused a wound in the tree." I waited for a second to see if it would take root.
"I don't think that's true," said one of the kids, "because the scar bulges out. Wouldn't a squirrel path make an indent?"
I had to do some quick thinking. "That's what you would think," I said, "but think about it: whenever you get a wound, isn't it true that the scarred area always bulges out, and not in?"
There was a short pause.
"Oh yeah, that does make sense," they all said.

I hope God has enough heart to forgive me someday.
