In the Dark Tower series, Roland's greatest fear is that when he gets to the dark tower and opens the door to the room at the top, he finds nothing. Later on, he alters his fear. He decides that it would be even worse to get to the top room and find some bumbling idiot living there, or some half-witted fool.

On the late night Sonic run that Erik and I had, we ended up discussing our greatest fears with the people we had met there. Erik said that his greatest fear was that there would be nothing when he dies. Mine is similar. I greatly fear the possibility of dying and realizing that everything is useless, and there is no rhyme or reason to existence.

I'm starting to sway towards Roland's line of thought though. Perhaps the greatest blow of all would be to realize that some incompetent, malicious being was running the whole show after all.
