History's never seemed very real to me. I can walk in the same places where great battles were fought, but I can neither fathom, imagine, nor feel the countless lives and sacrifices lost and made. About a century and a half ago, this field was strewn with bodies, yet somehow it means almost nothing to me.I have always had trouble making things I don't experience be real in my mind. People's hurts, loves, and losses are often as real to me as the stories in a book. Maybe that's why I don't enjoy talking on the telephone.
I doubt the artist(s) who crafted this monument imagined that it would inspire and help to create one of my favorite photographs. I guess that trying to make history funny is how I try to connect with it.
